While closely resembling the plaice in both form and colouring, There are a few spiny bony plates on the upper surface of the head and along the lateral line, which runs almost straight down the middle of the fish. They are the only flatfishes found in fresh water and are common in the brackish waters of estuaries, creeks and harbours especially in the summer. These are a great winter fish .
Tactics
Flounder are very aggressive and are attracted to colour and movement this is where the flounder spoon comes in, offering movement with its blade and colour with its beads and presented on a running rig with light tackle. The trick with flounders is to move the bait every now and again and I tend not to use a gripper lead so the bait moves with the flow. Flounders feed with the incoming tide and in a few feet of water so no need for long casts. Another tip is not to strike on the first bite, let it develop or you just pull the bait from its mouth.
Bait
Flounders can be taken with worm baits, crab and shell fish the larger fish will take small fish and can be caught occasionally with a spinner. A bunch of Maddies baited on a spoon can be deadly. garden worms also can work well in brackish water.
Eating
Good grilled or fried some say they taste a little muddy but I have not found it so.
